The AIM Centre was delighted to host the recent Skillnet Ireland Regional Insights Roadshow in the North West - an inspiring and forward-looking event focused on the evolving skills needs of Irish businesses. We were honoured to welcome a distinguished group of guests, including Maria Walsh, Midlands–North-West MEP; Frank Feighan, Sligo-Leitrim TD; Minister of State for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Marian Harkin TD; and Mark Jordan, Chief Executive, Skillnet Ireland. Their presence underscored the national significance of the conversation and the region’s potential to lead in workforce innovation.
Addressing the Skills Gap in the North West
Coinciding with the event was the launch of Skillnet Ireland’s insightful report, Ireland’s Talent Landscape 2025: Future Skills Challenges of Irish Business. Among its key findings, the report revealed that nearly half (47%) of businesses in the North West expect to upskill their workforce - especially in digital competencies - over the next two to three years.
In particular, businesses cited the need for skills in Microsoft Office (80%), cloud computing (63%), and the Internet of Things (63%). Alongside digitalisation, sustainability emerged as a growing priority, with 26% of businesses identifying a need for upskilling in areas such as energy efficiency, sustainable supply chain management, and innovation for green growth.
A Region on the Move
While 91% of businesses described their operations as strong or very strong, 59% acknowledged that their core skills needs are shifting rapidly. Time constraints, more than awareness or willingness, were cited as the most common barrier to accessing training and development.
AIM Centre's Commitment to Growth
As a hub for innovation and enterprise in the region, the AIM Centre is committed to supporting businesses through these transitions. We work closely with networks such as Retail Ireland Skillnet, Rural Enterprise Skillnet, Sligo Chamber Skillnet, and Tech NorthWest Skillnet to ensure that local companies have access to relevant, flexible upskilling supports.
We are proud to have hosted this significant event and look forward to continuing our work in building a resilient, future-ready workforce for the North West and beyond.
